I went out Saturday night and guess what? I forgot to video Robin Hood! UGH! I got halfway to the Theatre and realised.

Well, I finally saw the recent episode Sunday night. The writer was obviously familiar with one of the earliest surviving medieval Robin Hood ballads, ‘Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne.’ Robin has a mysterious dream, he is sure it is some kind of warning, he argues with Little John, Robin meets Sir Guy leaning against a tree and he fights with Sir Guy for ‘two howres of a summers day.’

The whole episode had that sinister mood, very much like the original ballad. For anyone interested in this historical aspect of the Robin Hood legend click on and Hester has a whole web site of authentic Robin Hood ballads to listen to. In the future I will be including details of the medieval ballads on my Story of Robin Hood blog.

Hi Clement,
Glad you got to see it in the end.

If I remember rightly, Gisborne is a fairly minor character in the legends. Basically an assassin wrapped in animal fur. Robin kills him, and that's it.

I think it was Hollywood who made him such a big character when Basil Rathbone took the part, and the Sheriff was relegated to a buffoon. (I don't much care for that Errol Flynn film myself).

Was the Errol Flynn one the one with Marian in that horrible chastity belt? That scene has stuck in my head for years, to my disappointment.

Anyways, that's a side note. Here's a good question for everyone - do you think the acid really burnt off all of Gisborne's tatoo? You don't actually see it, you just see him whimpering and the Sheriff cackling with glee!

I don't think a chastity belt was part of Olivia De Havilland's wardrobe! But that film can be hilarious to watch today. She has a different gown for every scene, and the merry men look like garden gnomes - speeded up during the action scenes.

As for Guy's tattoo? I think it's gone. But I think earlier he was awake and listening to Marian and Robin talking in the forest.
