Robin Hood. Episode 11. Dead Man Walking.

The Story: Whilst ruthlessly collecting taxes, Guy of Gisborne discovers a concealed supply of Saracen designed bows, obviously intended for Robin Hood. He arrests the bow maker responsible, together with his boy accomplice, not knowing it is actually Little John's son. Before Gisborne's men can reach Nottingham, Little John makes a foolhardy rescue attempt, but is overcome.
Will Scarlet and Alan A ' Dale are in Nottingham distributing coins among the poor, and see Little John in chains. Marian also sees John amongst a group of other prisoners, and tries to speak to the Sheriff of Nottingham and Guy about the unfair nature of the taxes. It is noticeable that although she can find the courage to deal with Guy, the mere presence of the Sheriff makes her very nervous indeed, and with good reason. There has never been a Sheriff of Nottingham quite as ruthless as Keith Allen, who soon decides to torture the bow maker unless he agrees to make more Saracen bows for his soldiers, and devises a Festival of Pain to ensure the people of Nottingham are more prompt with taxes in the future.
Little John is thrown into the dungeon next to his son, who sadly only remembers him as the giant he once met in the forest. (Episode 1). He doesn't know John is his father. Later on, when the boy's mother, is also thrown into the same cell, she denies knowing John and refuses to believe he left her for such a noble cause as becoming one of Robin Hood's men. These scenes are a welcome turn of events for Gordon Kennedy admirers like me, who have long since complained at how the producers have confined his Little John to a silent background extra.
To rescue John, Robin Hood and Alan A ' Dale disguise themselves as soldiers. This provides an opportunity for some well placed humour when they find themselves being ordered around by Guy of Gisborne, who fails to recognise them. This even leads to Robin gaining access to Marian's room, shortly after witnessing Guy attempting to kiss her; a kiss from which he was rejected. Marian is clearly thrilled to see Robin, and drops a strong hint about waiting too long for someone. She also informs him about a revenue wagon destined to leave Nottingham, and Robin determines to expand his plan to not only rescue John, but also steal the revenue. The story's genuinely thrilling climax involves the Sheriff's Festival of Fun as he begins to unveil a plethora of torture devices and red hot cinders. As the tension mounts Little John's anger combines with his mighty strength to shatter the huge oak stocks that were shackled about his neck. Robin Hood also appears on the balcony, throwing down the coins from the revenue wagon onto the soldiers below, causing chaos as they dive for the gold. But Little John is beside himself with rage, pinning the Sheriff to the ground, and raising his dagger high...
Comment: A great episode, which saw the whole cast being given much more to do than stand through a series of stock poses before the camera lens. Gordon Kennedy as Little John displays what the character really could and should have been from the very start, had the producers kept closer to those stories entrenched in the original legend. The humour was also very cleverly placed, providing a counter balance to the emotional roller coaster within Little John's family scenes. This was easily Gordon Kennedy's episode, and not before time, but mention must be made of Keith Allen. Although Allen is not going to win the hearts of the teenage audience who watch the series more for Jonas and Harry, this great actor has been superb from episode one. He understands exactly just how far he can go as the most evil Sheriff of all time, before slipping back into an almost (never quite) pantomime delivery. Excellent.

hi
wow that was a fabby episode that saw all robins merry men (!) have larger and more important roles. i absolutly loved this episode, sooo much. it also re-instated guy as a big bad man (!!) being horrendous to those poor peasants, and marion get a bit less 'seeing the good in every one' and totally make it obvious that she was really really pleased to see robin which was lovely. the merry men also distributed money to the peasants which was good. such a fabby episode,it made up for last weeks. phew still getting over the emotiol scenes with gordan kennedy! clara xxx

Hi clara,

Certainly was emotional wasn't it? And yes, the "giving to the poor" bit was good to see. I agree it all made up for last week.

Hi Freya,

thanks for pointing that out. Sorted.
I thought the humour was really well done too. I certainly needed a bit of cheering up when Little John's boy didn't know who he was.

I agree Kat. A GREAT episode, which not only made me laugh, but also I have to confess to one or two little tears in the eyes...

What I REALLY want to see now is a Will Scarlet episode. Scarlet is the best outlaw in the legend. He's the rebel; the rogue; the one filled with the most anger.

I wonder what would it take to turn Harry's Scarlet angry and bitter. Hmmmm... maybe something happening to Djaq???

EVERYBODY:

Sorry 'bout having to repost this episode. But I thought you'd actually prefer it to have the pictures with the text. Many more pictures to come over the weeks ahead.

Hi
I just had to write again because i am still thinking about that episode, it was so marvy. I really enjoy Lucy Griffiths acting when it comes to her around Guy of Gisborne, she makes Marions movements so stiff and forced, whereas around Robin Hood her movements flow, also there is good on screen chemistry between Jonus and Lucy which is great. i keep wondering how it will end? Their fiery romance. it was so so so good to see Little John have a episode, all his sceens were really moving. it was touching to see his struggle about his wife and child, and see his wife with another man, a good man at that. lovely. and as you said the indervidual humor of the series kept me from weeping at times!! yeah i agree that Will needs an episode but it will most likely be in the bext series as the last two of this series (*cries*) seem to be taken uo with the King coming back. that spells trouble! claraxxx

Hi Clara,
I think King Richard was BIG trouble. History used to paint him as a hero, but his Crusade bankrupted the country, he was hardle ever home looking after his own people, and who needed the war in the first place?

Hi
yeah i agree war sucks and so did King Richard!!!! lol i hope the series doesnt end in a HUGE catesrophe (spelling lol) but then all the main cast have signed on again so no-one dies. . . hmmm. also wasnt it funny when marion dropped her hint about sometimes waiting to long for someone and robin looked devestated she covered it up a bit? even tho it was perfectly obvious what she was talking about? i think that was sweet, her seeing how much that upset robin. clara xxx

Anonymous: I think in a programme which is shown so early in the evening I wouldn't want to see Guy taking Marian by force. As we all know "No means no", and it would send a wrong message to very young viewers.

Anna,

Glad you like the site. If it's Robin Hood in general you're after then follow the links. I intend to include EVERY Robin Hood film on my blogs, AND bring you pictures of the real life places he lived, played, and robbed the rich to give the poor.

If its just Jonas Robin, then welcome still. (A new blog for series 2 is already waiting). And yes, we're all waiting for "the kiss" before the series ends!

I really really really loved this weeks episode. It very much, as others have said made up for last week's episode.
Again, I agree, a GREAT ep for Little John, that was long overdue, but definitely worth the wait.
Also, Will had more action in this one which was nice, though I am looking forward to more and more from him. He is becoming more prominent and you can see the force of his personality coming out more and more as things go along.
Robin was cheeky and great in this episode, and I adored the one where he gets access to Marian's room. So sweet and wonderful! hehehe, I was grinning the whole time...those two are so sweet together. It was nice to see Marian's face light up the way it did, and it was nice to see that again Robin found time to be thoroughly amused with himself.

John was amazing...what else can I say? I cried and laughed with him, and he just kicks butt. Though I feel so sad for him still, and have very mixed feelings about his wife Alice...he was rather betrayed yet it is such a sad situation you feel sad for her at hte same time.

Me to Riya.

Expectations are very high for the second series - especially regarding the fact that EVERYONE saw Marian run off with Robin. the Sheriff simply cannot ignore that!!!
